Greetings from the President
Welcome to the College of Santa Fe.
As you explore CSF by perusing our website, I want to take a moment to introduce myself, and tell you that we have something in common. Like you, I'm new to CSF. I was appointed as president in summer 2007 and I am still getting to know the campus community -- our students, faculty, staff and alumni, as well as many Santa Feans and other residents of northern New Mexico who come to the college for our arts and cultural programming. As president, I will focus my first year on building trust among all members of the CSF community.
I believe CSF offers a world-class liberal education for students who value a creative culture of learning and personal freedom; students who want to determine their futures based on their own values and interests, and who want their college experience to take them out of their high school comfort zones.
CSF students are actively engaged in their education; there is no passive learning at CSF. Our students sit still for very little. Politics, art, campus life issues, the environment -- anything can stir debate, and often a cross-section of the campus gets involved in the discussion, which can result in uncovering opinions and ideas you've never considered, as well as creative collaboration between departments and/or individuals with vastly divergent intellectual pursuits or aesthetic ideals.
Because we continually strive to re-shape and enhance what's available to our students, and appeal to the “whole person” outside of the classroom, darkroom and dorm room, we're now devising a new non-scholarship athletics program -- to debut in Fall 2008 -- which will include soccer, tennis and golf, as well as softball and baseball. Many of our alumni are thrilled to see sports returning to campus, so I know we'll have built-in boosters to cheer on you and your classmates, should you choose to participate.
Finding the right college is an important step in your life, one that should take you to places off the beaten track. You have to make a decision based on what's right for you, your goals, and for your peace of mind. Use your instincts. Guides and rankings show only numbers; they're a way of distilling a college experience onto a spreadsheet. I'm learning that the College of Santa Fe is more exciting than any spreadsheet I've ever encountered.
