Creative Writing and Literature
The Creative Writing and Literature Department offers rigorous study of writing and literature with small classes taught by award-winning faculty.
Four-year programs for a bachelor of arts are offered in two major fields: Creative Writing and English.
Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing
The Creative Writing Program is a rigorous bachelor’s program built on a master of fine arts model. Students choose two tracks to study — the writing of poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction or dramatic writing (screen or play) — and take at least seven workshop courses in their chosen areas, where they give and receive critique on their original work.
Ample requirements in literature and other specialized writing courses provide a foundation in historical context and critical thinking.
Seniors take two courses to round out their creative writing degree: The Writer and the Universe, an interdisciplinary special topics course that examines the role of the writer within a liberal arts framework; and Senior Reading, where students put together a portfolio of original work as well as organize and present a public reading. A minor is required; if the student is pursuing a double-major, a minor is not required.
Bachelor of Arts in English
This program involves students in language and literature skills. The program emphasizes an understanding of the human condition through courses that focus on critical interpretations of literature, the relation of literary works to their times and to each other, and student evaluations of these works.
Courses for the major include: Techniques of Poetry & Fiction, Mythology, American Literature, British Literature, Classical World Literature, Shakespeare, Gender & Literature, The Contemporary Novel, Contemporary Poetry, and Literary Theory. Special Topics include courses in Post-Colonial Literature, African American Writers, Latino Writers, Russian Writers and Native American Writers, as well as seminars on literature of witness, history of comedy, and other literary movements.
For the senior capstone, English majors study Literary Theory and write a thesis paper that integrates a literary work with some aspect of literary theory. A minor is required unless a double major is being pursued.
Minors
The department offers three minor programs in the following fields: Creative Writing, English/Literature and English/Writing.
New York Arts Program
CSF is affiliated with the Great Lakes College Association’s New York Arts Program (NYAP). Through this highly competitive program, creative writing students in good standing (having a GPA of 3.0 overall and 3.25 in their major) are eligible to apply.
