Science and Conservation Studies - Programs
The Science and Conservation Studies department is merging with the new Center for Liberal Arts and Interdisciplinary Studies (LAIS). Please check back for complete information in September 2008.
Environmental Documentation Major
Understanding and communicating contemporary environmental issues and their ultimate resolutions requires strengths in more than one discipline. Conservation biology and documentary studies are a natural combination bringing together their respective strengths in this fusion major. Students will acquire an appropriate background in the science of conservations and the practice of documentation in a variety of media, necessary to reach a broad audience.
Environmental Science Major
This program, available at the Albuquerque campus only, begins with a strong base of chemistry, biology and geology, and is rounded out by physics, calculus and statistics. The upperdivision courses are more specific, and give students an introduction to specialized topics such as Waste Management and Industrial Hygiene. This degree prepares students for general environmental scientist positions in government agencies, private industries, and consulting companies.
Global Ecology & Politics Major
Understanding and addressing contemporary environmental issues, such as global warming, requires strengths in multiple disciplines, including politics, ecology, genetics, anthropology, and conservation biology. Majors will engage environmental problems using practical and hands-on field experiences in places such as Brazil, Chihuahua, Yucatan, and National Parks. Students majoring in Global Ecology and Politics will fuse elements of both disciplines, allowing a clear view of causes, problems, and potential solutions.
