Eligibility top

CSF is approved for Veterans Administration training. The first step is to determine benefits eligibility for veterans and their dependents. Students who are applying for benefits for the first time must complete an application for benefits according to education chapter eligibility. If you have used your benefits at another institution you must fill out a VA Form 22-1995, Request for Change of Program or Place of Training. Benefits end ten years from the date of your last discharge or release from active duty.

VA Educational Chapters top

Chapter 30
Requires VA Form 22-1990

Chapter 31
Requires VA Counseling at the Albuquerque VA Office (Vocational Rehabilitation

Chapter 32
Requires VA Form 22-1990 (Post-Vietnam Era Veterans' Educational Assistance Program)

Chapter 35
Complete VA Form 22-5490 (Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program)

Chapter 1606
Requires VA Form 22-1990 (Reservists)

There are many guidelines that may determine your eligibility for a particular chapter i.e., dates of service, service-connected disabilities, and reserve status. Students are encouraged to contact the VA Regional Office at 1-888-GI-BILL-1 in Muskogee, Oklahoma, for confirmation of their eligibility.

Enrollment Status top

Educational benefit payments are based on the enrollment status (full-time, 3/4-time, 1/2-time). Students registered for six semester hours per nine-week term are considered full-time. Students registered for three semester hours per nine-week term are considered half time. Students who add/drop after they have registered must immediately notify the College of Santa Fe Certifying Official to avoid creating overpayments by the VA office. If an overpayment is created the student is liable for repayment to the VA.

Eligible Courses & Programs top

All College of Santa Fe Programs are approved for VA training. Students must be degree seeking in a program and complete all College of Santa Fe admissions requirements. Courses taken must be required for the students program in order to use benefits for those courses. Non-degree students are NOT eligible for VA educational benefits.

Class Certification Information top

The VA Certifying Official for the College of Santa Fe will certify students each term based on their schedule of classes for the term. Students using VA benefits need to complete a schedule verification form, which can be obtained at the Kirtland AFB or San Pedro Campus or by clicking the following link (coming soon). This form is completed by the student their academic advisor. The form is then returned either campus.

Grade Options top

Traditional grades (A, B, C, D, or F) are acceptable for VA educational payments. Audit, no credit, and withdraw grade options will create an overpayment for the eligible student. All students must maintain satisfactory attendance, conduct, progress, and academic standards stated in the College of Santa Fe catalog.

Benefit Payment top

The VA pays on a post-payment system, which means that the student will be paid after the month is past. The VA Regional Office will send students a monthly verification form by the fifth of every month to ensure student enrollment accuracy. The verification form must be sent back to the regional office for processing of payment. The first payment will be made 6-8 weeks after certification. Direct deposit is available for Chapter 30 and Chapter 1606 students. If you do not receive a payment within 6-8 weeks after the start of the term, contact the VA Regional Office at 1-888-442-4551.

VA Work-Study Program top

For the VA Work-Study program, a student must have VA educational eligibility and be certified for at least 3/4-time status. VA Work-Study applications VA Form 20-8691 are available at the VA Regional Office and the Kirtland Campus.
