Fine Arts Gallery - Artist Point

On Friday, September 12, from 5 – 8 p.m., the CSF Fine Arts Gallery debuts its new show "Artist Point", curated by Patrick Kikut, and featuring the work of David Jones, Edgar Smith and Kikut.

"Artist Point" denotes both place and action. According to Kikut, the title designates a landscape as well as signifying the simple action of pointing to a particular place or thing.

The work of David Jones attempts to depict the ever reaching effects of human consumption, its cause and effect, as well as the long and short-term repercussions of our actions in the environment. His work is often small in scale and displayed under bell jars, an effort to focus on the preciousness of its content. He currently resides in Laramie, Wyoming.

Highway travel is a recurring theme in Patrick Kikut's work. "Traveling allows me access into compelling landscapes, stories, and cultures. These things feed the work I do in the studio." Raised in a small beach town in Southern California, Kikut has lived and worked throughout the West, including Santa Fe, where he started the influential No Man's Land Gallery. His work in this show depicts types of signage indicative of "Artist Point", such as those found at scenic overlooks in National Parks. His images are drawn from passage within protected forests and landscapes.

Edgar Smith received an MFA in Sculpture from Ohio University in 1989 and an MA in Art History from the University of Montana in 2004. Smith teaches drawing, painting, and sculpture at the University of Montana, and exhibits regularly in the Montana area. Currently, Smith is exploring a variety of ways of working. He continues to paint using traditional techniques, often with a narrative in mind. Recently he has re-kindled his interest in other media and non-objective painting techniques. Smith works and lives in Missoula, Montana.

For the work in this show, Edgar Smith reduced the idea of "artist's point", taking the traditional depiction of a landscape and focusing on "tree" or "bark". Seemingly minimalist, these pieces ultimately refer to broader issues in the Western landscape. Smith also explores the relationship of kitsch in the American West, playing with the idea of the trophy mount or the art of taxidermy. Smith works and lives in Missoula, Montana.
