Fine Arts Gallery - A Darkened Line
A Darkened Line: Art and Death
July 8 - July 30, 2006
Opening Reception: Saturday, July 8, 5-9 p.m.
CSF's Fine Arts Gallery debuts its new show "A Darkened Line" on Saturday, July 8, featuring work from artists Vincent Borrelli, Michael Cook, EG Crichton, Inga Dorosz, Bart Lynch, Ben Meisner, Nancy Sutor, Sherlock Terry and Mary Tsiongas. Musical group A Black Lux will perform.
"A Darkened Line" refers to the edge of knowledge, to the edge of experience or simply to our helplessness when confronted with the immovable rules of mortality. It might be the border between what is rational and what is mystical. Or maybe it's the space where we survey our condition, sifting through loss, exploring the inevitable. The nine artists in this exhibition work along that line, brushing against death and dying either in subject or aesthetic disposition.
Curated by David Leigh, "A Darkened Line" brings together work and ideas that question our relationship to death, confronting the nature of healing and loss. From Inga Dorosz' paper boat being sucked down a drain to Michael Cook's historically-minded reflections on nuclear weapons, from Ben Meisner's methodically refined line drawings to Mary Tsiongas' interactive touch screen of a wounded animal, this exhibition highlights the ways in which artists use their various technologies to glean answers about the end.
"A Darkened Line: Art and Death" opens on Saturday, July 8 from 5 - 9 p.m. The opening is scheduled in conjunction with events at CSF's Marion Center for Photographic Arts and MOV-in Gallery. There will be good food and entertainment. CSF Fine Arts Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 11 -4 p.m. The gallery is located on the CSF campus in the Southwest Annex next to Fogelson Library.
