"Look Closer: Spring 2009 BFA Exhibition" at the College of Santa Fe Fine Arts Gallery

Santa Fe, NM – On Friday, May 1, from 5 – 7 p.m., the College of Santa Fe Fine Arts Gallery presents the BFA exhibition "Look Closer" featuring the work of Sarah Freeman, Bettina Lancaster, Bennett Onsager, Charlotte Thurman and Jared Antonio-Justo Trujillo. This is an exhibition by the graduating seniors earning a BFA degree in Studio Art.

Sarah Freeman's exquisitely rendered portraits are part real and part imaginary. Using her face in a mirror as reference for the eyes, nose, and mouth, she tries to create new characters based on this information. What remains is a figurative presence that merges caricature with self-portraiture.

Humor has become characteristic of Bennett Onsager's recent work. His ceramic hands, some with eyes and mouths, can be seen clutching broken computer keyboards or simply crawling across a gallery pedestal. He will include drawings of these hands—as well as the sculptures—for Look Closer.

Bettina Lancaster makes sensuous paintings whose heavily textured surfaces blatantly hold the history of her actions and ideas. Her snakelike forms travel over a mental map that simultaneously calls to mind the lines of Nazca as well as the soft abstract expressionism of Philip Guston or Susan Rothenberg.

Charlotte Thurman explores themes of observation, documentation and controlled methods of representation as they relate to personal identity. Her performances, installations and drawings are primarily based on the body and deal with in-depth, self-reflexive research. This "self as subject" approach will be presented in two rooms: an interactive space that gets painted by colored bubbles and a second room with an ink and marker drawing in it.

Jared Antonio-Justo Trujillo's recent installations have used vinyl lettering to create graphic interventions in the gallery's architectural field. Look Closer will include similar vinyl installations and light boxes.
