College of Santa Fe Professor Terry Borst Co-Authors Book on Development of Video Games

How-to guide for combining game play, story and player experience

Santa Fe, N.M., February 12, 2010 - A new book co-authored by Terry Borst, professor of screenwriting at the College of Santa Fe, provides advice and guidance on video game development. The book, End-to-End Game Development, is co-authored with Nick Iuppa, an interactive media designer.

"The tools for game creation are more widely available, and less costly, than ever before," said Borst. "This book delivers a proven process for meshing game play and story to create an immersive experience for the player."

End-to-End Game Development is a natural outgrowth of Borst's exploration of new narrative forms. He was a co-screenwriter on the groundbreaking videogames "Wing Commander III" and "Wing Commander IV." He was also one of the co-writers of the screenplay for Microsoft's epic space adventure "Freelancer" and wrote the screenplay for "Leaders," a Paramount Digital Entertainment R&D video game set in newly liberated Afghanistan.

"The move into interactive screenwriting was purely accidental," said Borst in an interview with Screenwriters Utopia. "My writing partner, Frank De Palma, and I knew a story editor who was consulting for Electronic Arts. Electronic Arts and Origin were looking for professional screenwriters who could write the screenplay for 'Wing Commander III.' Fortunately, we seemed to 'understand' (or quickly learned) what interactivity might add to a narrative, leading to our winning several awards."

In addition to the College of Santa Fe, Borst has taught scriptwriting at USC's School of Cinematic Arts, UCLA Extension Writers Program, Moorpark College, Santa Fe Community College, the Banff Centre for the Arts and several screenwriting conferences. During these years he also has been a frequent speaker, lecturer and radio guest.
